False alarms kill: fire preventions

I don’t know if you remember the story of a little shepherd that was watching the flock for some people in a village. Because he was very fond of playing tricks, he decided one day to start shouting: “Help me!!! A bear attacked the flock!!!” Some villagers came running as fast as they could but all they saw was the little boy laughing. He did this twice and the villagers were convinced he was just joking. After a while a real bear came to the flock and the boy started to shout again. Unfortunately this time no one believed him and no one came to save him. The previous false alarms made him not worthy of trust so this caused him death.

Even if this is only a story you heard several times when you were a child, it is very true when it comes to our days situations. There could be false alarms that people would just ignore along with real alarms. How can this happen?

As you may know all the employers have to have periodical training for fire protection and prevention. The law obliges them to teach all the employees what they have to do in case of fire emergencies. The idea that preventing is better than curing or repairing is valid in this case too. Making your people aware of the fire devastating power can help avoiding the situations when a fire can start and develop very fast. As you’ve heard before the most important thing is NOT TO PANIC. Creating panic will bring chaos which will lead to even lost of life for someone. Then it’s important to leave it to the professionals. In every unit there should be persons responsible with fire extinctions and with people and goods evacuation. Do not assume responsibilities that you weren’t instructed for. In many cases you can do worse than better. But even if you don’t go to fight the fire, you have a very important role: to shout “fire!!!” to make the others aware of the presence of the fire. In many cases this can make the difference between life and death.

But how can happen to have false alarms? There are special devices special made for fire or smoke detection. These are really useful, but unfortunately there are times when they start at the minimum sign of smoke creating panic. After three or four of these false alarms people in a building will just ignore the fire alarm and will be passive when it comes to saving their lives believing there’s no danger. Then, there can be too many fire exercises to check how fast evacuation is done. After a while people would take every fire alarm as an exercise and will slow down things or even will just ignore it, saying they have work to do and they do not have time for these games. If you encounter this kind of situations in your building try to advise your supervisor about the dangers so you avoid future danger.

As you may see the stories can repeat in our day to day life. Fire prevention is good, but false alarms prevention can also be a friend when it comes to saving others life. Because indeed there can be cases when false alarms kill.
